Made for the Chicago firm of Kenneth Warren & Son as indicated on the label, this handsome viola was actually made in the home workshop of Eugene Knapik in Chesterton, Indiana.
Eugene Knapik left a legacy to the world, not only through his instruments, but also by bequeathing his entire workshop and estates to Indiana University's School of Music, which has now become the Le Bovit Knapik String Instrument Laboratory at Indiana University's Jacob School of Music. The Eugene J. and Eleanor J. Knapik Fund provides scholarships for graduate or undergraduate students majoring in violin, viola, or cello.
This viola is in perfect condition, and has a warm, resonant sound. The sides of this viola are slightly higher than usual, but because of the reasonable length, it is still easy to play.
As with all high-end instruments and bows, we recommend that you make an appointment to audition this viola at our shop in southern California before committing to the purchase of this viola.
