Sam Billings studied with Rebecca Elliot at the Chicago School of Violin Making, beginning in 2000. He continued his studies of 17th and 18th century Cremonese violin making techniques from 2003-2013 in Chicago, where he was represented by the firms of Kenneth Warren & Son, Carl Becker & Son, and Bein & Fushi. During this time, Billings built over one hundred violins that were acquired by discerning players, such as Edward Dusinberre, first violinist of the Takács Quartet, and Yvonne Lam of Eighth Blackbird. Billings currently builds his violins on a late Guarneri model at his studio in Los Angeles.
