Instruments (violins, violas, cellos and basses)
Metzler Violins warranties these specific items for one year from the date of purchase: Seams between the top and the sides, and between the back and the sides of the purchased instrument that open during this period will be glued by us at our expense. We warranty that the fingerboard will have the correct curvature and longitudinal “scoop”, and that the surface will be free of bumps that could cause buzzing. We warranty that the bridge will be within normal heights, and we will lower any bridge to your specifications if too high. A bridge that feels too low will only be replaced if that bridge is truly out of the range of acceptable heights, as determined by Metzler Violins. The bridge is also warrantied to have the appropriate curve, and we agree to modify the curve one time at our expense if the bridge is too round or too flat. Pegs that are too stiff, or that slip will be adjusted at no charge. We warranty that the nylon tail-gut holding the tailpiece in place will not break or come undone, and that any fine-tuners in the tailpiece will turn smoothly.
These items are specifically not covered by Metzler’s warranty: Cracks of any kind are not covered. Damage to, or breakage of strings is not covered. Breakage of the bridge, chin rest, pegs, or tailpiece is not covered. Breakage of any part of the neck or pegbox or scroll is not covered. Repositioning of a fallen sound post is not covered. Many of these excluded items can be covered by a supplemental instrument insurance policy, or by a home-owner’s insurance policy, and we highly recommend the purchase of supplemental insurance on every instrument purchased.
Metzler Violins warranties these specific items for six months from the date of purchase: If the horsehair becomes too long for the bow to function properly, Metzler Violins will, at our choice, either rehair the bow or shorten the hair. Similarly, if any of the three wooden plugs that hold the hair in place fail, Metzler will repair the problem at our cost during this period.
These items are specifically not covered by Metzler’s warranty: Cracks in, or breakage of the stick, frog or tip are not covered. Breakage of the horsehair is not covered. (Some hair breakage is normal, and excessive hair breakage is usually due to insect damage or to aggressive playing technique.) Minor warpage of the bow stick is considered normal, and is not covered by a warranty. Major warpage, as determined by the Metzler Violin Shop, will result in the exchange or straightening of the warped bow. As with instruments, many of these excluded items would be covered by a supplemental insurance policy, or by a home-owner’s insurance policy, and we highly recommend the purchase of supplemental insurance on every bow purchased.
Instrument strings are not covered by a warranty of any kind. However, with care and careful tuning, a set of strings may last from three to six months or longer. But your experience may be different. The most common reason for premature string breakage is over-tuning of the strings, fingernail damage, and sweaty hands. You can break strings in seconds if you tune a string too high, and strings can be destroyed in days if your fingernails are not kept very short. The acid in hand sweat can destroy strings in weeks. Players with sweaty hands must be prepared to change strings as often as monthly, but may be able to prolong string life by washing hands thoroughly before, and several times during a practice session. Other reasons for string breakage include incorrect angles or widths of the string grooves in the ebony nut or bridge, and the winding of strings too tightly against the pegbox wall. Strings will be accepted for return only if we have mistakenly sent out the wrong string, and if it has not been removed from the packaging.
Cases are covered by the manufacturers’ own warranties. Cases that have no manufacturer’s warranty are covered by Metzler’s 30 day Satisfaction Guaranty. Metzler Violins will help facilitate warranty repair on cases, but does not repair cases at their store. Do not send any items to Metzler for warranty repair without written authorization.
Sheet music that has been misprinted will be replaced at Metzler’s cost. Slight yellowing of the paper, or minor wrinkling is not considered grounds for return. All sheet-music is inspected for completeness prior to shipping.
Accessories are covered by the manufacturers’ warranties. All accessories that do not have warranties are covered by Metzler’s 30 day Satisfaction Guaranty. (See Returns)
