Paul Wiessmeyer has owned and operated his Boston studio together with bow maker Thomas Dignan since 1990. Before establishing Wiessmeyer Violins LLC, Paul graduated from the Mittenwald School of Violin Making in Germany. Upon graduation in 1981, Paul worked for several violin shops in Europe and the U.S. including, most notably, the ateliers of Vladimir Pilar in Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, and Hans Weisshaar in Hollywood, CA.
Paul’s instruments have received international recognition in numerous competitions; in 1981, he received a gold medal at the H. Wienawski Violin Competition in Poland and, in 1982, he won gold medals for violin, viola, and cello at the VSA International Violin Competition in Salt Lake City and designated hors’ concours.
Throughout his career, Paul has placed a strong emphasis on providing the highest quality of craftsmanship and services tailored to the needs of string players at affordable prices.
He is also the designer the patented leather mute used by countless musicians around the world.
During summers, Paul teaches repair and set-up seminars at the University of New Hampshire Violin Craftsmanship Institute. He can also be found instructing short seminars in the art of violin varnish retouch as well as teaching and lecturing at various venues, both at home and abroad.
Most recently he was requested to be a judge at the 2016 VSA International Violin Making Competition.
