Under the guidance of his uncle, Friedhoff Calvo crafted his first violin at the age of fifteen and quickly created a connection with the notable Catalan violin maker David Bagué. While earning a degree in industrial engineering, Friedhoff Calvo briefly studied under Derek Roberts in England to learn essential elements of violin making. His undergraduate thesis of a stringless MIDI earned him an award for Best Engineering Thesis that year. Upon graduation, Friedhoff Calvo began to apprentice under the Violin Society of America Gold Medalist Paul Hart in Utah, building his first cello. After two years, Friedhoff Calvo spent a decade working in the Ifshin Violin shop in El Cerrito, California, apprenticing under Haide Lin to learn the nuances of repair and restoration. While focusing on repair and restoration at Ifshin, Friedhoff Calvo also began to build instruments of his own in his private Oakland shop. He quickly earned accolades for his work. Since 2014, he has consistently received VSA certificates for tone, artisanship, and earned a Silver Medal for Quartet Tone in 2024. He began building instruments full-time in 2020. Friedhoff Calvo has continued to learn about craftsmanship under the tutelage of Ryan Soltis, the Oberlin Acoustics workshop, and the Oh, Berlin violin and bow making workshop.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violin-Artur-Friedhoff-Calvo-VN-F89-1-Front.jpg?v=1771363610
gaspar-borchardt-violin-2000-cremona-italy-metzler-violins
Gaspar Borchardt violin, 2000, Cremona, ITALY | Metzler Violins

soulful, warm, full

About the Instrument
This violin has a lovely depth of sound and resonance, particularly in the lower register. Since 1990, Borchardt has worked with his wife Sibylle Fehr in their workshop in Cremona. Borchardt’s instruments adhere to the traditional Cremonese methods of construction employed since Stradivari while using his own cultivated patterns. Known for refined instruments and using excellent and long-seasoned tonewoods, Borchardt often tests his instruments’ sound when they are “white” (unvarnished), as it is still possible to complete some technical changes at that stage for better acoustics. In 2015, Borchardt strove to find the same wood types used in Stradivari’s shop: flame maples in the Bosnian forest, some two-to-three centuries old, and cut during the winter (when the tree is lightest). These efforts are in the documentary “The Quest for Tonewood,” which shows the many complications of Borchardt’s efforts, including the landmines still present throughout the Bosnian countryside after the war in the 1990s.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violin-Gaspar-Borchardt-VN-K127-1-Front.jpg?v=1771362736
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violin-Jay-Haide-Lancienne-VN6379-Front.jpg?v=1771362888
klaus-heffler-stradivari-model-706-violin-2021-metzler-violins
Klaus Heffler Stradivari model 706 violin, 2021 | Metzler Violins

[more details about this instrument are forthcoming]

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violin-Klaus-Heffler-Stradivari-VN6449-Front.jpg?v=1771363438
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violin-Jay-Haide-Guarneri-VN6453-Front.jpg?v=1771362858
john-juzek-master-art-violin-no-190-strad-model-2025-metzler-violins
JOHN JUZEK Master Art violin No. 190, Strad model, 2025 - Baldoni’s luthier training is unknown, and it is generally believed he was self-taught. In 1900, he moved to Buenos Aires, initially crafting and repairing stringed instruments. After 1915, Baldoni focused almost entirely on making his own instruments. He received commissions from Jan Kubelik and Ferenc von Vescey, highly respected musicians who performed in the city’s Teatro Colón. Baldoni’s instrument for Kubelik, in particular, had an impact on his work. Inspired by the 1715 “Emperor” Stradivari, Baldoni employed that model for many of his future instruments, as well as one he developed based on the Carcassi brothers in Florence. He distinguished himself from his European counterparts by using South American woods, and frequently employed spirit varnish and vegetable dyes, leaning toward reds and plums colors. After 1940, Baldoni raised the height of his archings and thinned the top and back of his instruments, as well as enlarged his f-holes, in hopes of pursing a distinct sound. The quality of his instruments—their structural grace and tonal maturity—quickly made them desirable to players across the globe even during Baldoni’s lifetime.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violin-Dante-Baldoni-1929-VN-S211-1-Front.jpg?v=1771362610
fabrizio-giannini-highly-decorated-violin-ca-1935-viareggio-italy-metzler-violins
Fabrizio Giannini highly decorated violin, ca. 1935, Viareggio, ITALY | Metzler Violins

This whimsical violin was handcrafted by Fabrizio Giannini, an Italian luthier born in Arezzo in 1911.
