Lutz studied under his father, Ignaz Lutz I (who himself learned under Lutz’s grandfather). Lutz soon began working in ateliers in Vienna, Berlin, Paris, and London. By the time Lutz immigrated the United States, he was a highly regarded repairer and restorer of stringed instruments, particularly Italian violins. His atelier was on the main thoroughfare of San Francisco. Lutz owned the “Ehrlich” Stradivari of 1724 and used this instrument as his primary model for his own violins. His instruments often bear a notably beautiful reddish-brown lacquer of Lutz’s own formula that drew from the old masters, which he dubbed the “Cremona tone.” As with Stradivarius, Lutz hung his instruments in trees for over several warm, sunny, dry days—in Lutz’s case, in Bay Area cherry orchards. With no apprentice, the details of Lutz’s varnish formula died with him when he succumbed to a toxic nodular goiter. Overall, Lutz’s instruments emulate his dedication to classical designs and precision and his work was beloved by Fritz Kreisler, Carl Flesch, Mishel Piastro, and many others.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violins-Ignaz-Lutz-VN6263-Front.jpg?v=1779913140
andre-vigneron-pere-violin-bow-ex-eugene-fodor-sal
J.A. Since 1990, Borchardt has worked with his wife Sibylle Fehr in their workshop in Cremona. Borchardt’s instruments adhere to the traditional Cremonese methods of construction employed since Stradivari while using his own cultivated patterns. Known for refined instruments and using excellent and long-seasoned tonewoods, Borchardt often tests his instruments’ sound when they are “white” (unvarnished), as it is still possible to complete some technical changes at that stage for better acoustics. In 2015, Borchardt strove to find the same wood types used in Stradivari’s shop: flame maples in the Bosnian forest, some two-to-three centuries old, and cut during the winter (when the tree is lightest). These efforts are in the documentary “The Quest for Tonewood,” which shows the many complications of Borchardt’s efforts, including the landmines still present throughout the Bosnian countryside after the war in the 1990s.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violins-Gaspar-Borchardt-VN5744-Front.jpg?v=1779913341
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violins-Giuseppe-Scarampella-VNS2091-Front.jpg?v=1779913194
g-b-gabrielli-violin-1763-with-ifshin-certificat-metzler-violins
G.B. He likely trained under Bartolomeo Cristofori, an acolyte of Jacob Stainer. The German-Austrian maker loomed large in central Italy during the period in which Gabrielli was working, which may be why Gabrielli’s patterns and habits often emulate Stainer’s. Gabrielli’s violins echo those of Pier Lorenzo Vagelisti and Stainer for their high arches, though not as high as luthiers of the time, setting Gabrielli apart from his contemporaries. He was a precise and meticulous craftsman, selecting good quality woods for his instruments. His f-holes are an amalgamation of Stainer and Stradivari, and Gabrielli's varnishes are often amber in color, applied with painstaking care in thin, even layers. In terms of tone, his violins are known for their nuanced, bold, and clear timbres. His cellos are particularly excellent and desired. Gabrielli likely mentored the Carcassi brothers in their craft. Despite his fame and general acceptance as the premier Florentine luthier of his era, Gabrielli wasn’t a prolific maker. Initially trained as a carpenter, in 1895 Farotti began to pursue violin making, dedicating himself to the practice by 1898. The cellist Giuseppe mentored Farotti, convincing him to move to Milan, which the latter did in 1900, opening up his own shop in the major city. Initially focusing on repairs and restorations, Farotti learned the craft of luthiery from Cremonese masters alongside those of the Milanese school, soon becoming a successful dealer of instruments as well as build his own. He wrote in one note, “From the first year in 1900 when I moved to Milan, to 1923 I have sold many instruments and would not be able to even approximate a guess as to how many.”

By 1906, Farotti was overwhelmed with the volume of work and called for his brother Salvatore to help him and learn the craft. While Salvatore roughed out the instruments, Farotti completed the finishing off, scroll, purfling, f-holes, and varnish of each. This method made it possible for Farotti to craft many instruments, making him a prolific luthier while maintaining exceptional quality in his instruments. (His nephew Celestino Farotto, reclaiming the surname lost due to a clerical error, studied under his uncle in his workshop before beginning his own career as a luthier. Alfred Lanini also apprenticed at the atelier.) For his models, Farotti drew upon the work of Giovanni Francesco Pressenda and Giuseppe Antonio Rocca, developing his own in homage to these Turinese makers with bold innovations and brilliant varnishes. Farotti also made copies of Rocca, Pressenda, Guadagnini, Amati, Gagliano, and many others with excellence and care, though many no longer bear his label. His wood was always of superior selection, and included l’oppio or field maple and poplar in addition to the maple varieties commonly used by luthiers around the world. His plates were at times carved from high-grade wood beams salvaged from homes set for demolition. The Milanese influence is seen in his elongated corners, his personal touches in the extended scrolls.

In 1906, Farotti earned a Gold Medal in Milan and another in Turin in 1911. He continued to receive remarkable distinctions, including the Diploma of Medal of Honor in San Francisco and three medals at the National Violin Making Competition in Rome. He often used a label that bore the Casale Monferrato coat of arms in honor of his native city. After an accident while on a trip in the mountains in 1924, Farotti could no longer work, at which point his nephew Celestino took over his shop. Known for their lush tone and phenomenal quality, Farotti instruments are sought by professional players world wide.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violins-Celeste-Farotti-VNH1695-Front.jpg?v=1779913373
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0908/1149/8769/files/Metzler-Violins-Gerrit-Johan-Maurer-VNH1694-Front.jpg?v=1779913256
w-e-hill-sons-silver-violin-bow-circa-1900-metzler-violin-shop
W.E.
