WHAT IS A BAROQUE BOW?

The Baroque bow is of a particular shape and weight as used during the Baroque period in the 17th and 18th centuries. Baroque bows are shorter and lighter than their modern counterparts, with the wood stick looking like, well, a bow in need of an arrow. Its head was extended, almost like a swan’s beak. Ideal for dance-like music of the era with short notes, the Baroque bow was a particular style still employed by players today.

Contemporary bow makers who craft Baroque bows try to hew to the historical accuracy. That said, there was less of a standardization than there is today with contemporary bows, allowing for expression by the makers and variety. All allow for exploration of expression of this vibrant musical era.
