ESSENTIAL VIOLA ACCESSORIES

Viola Shoulder Rests

Shoulder rests are one of the most common accessory for violin and viola players. Viola shoulder rests are designed to make playing the viola comfortable. Finding the right support can transform your comfort, tone, and confidence—especially when you’re practicing for hours—by reducing the amount of pressure and contact between the instrument and the player’s shoulder. If you would like to try our variety of shoulder rests, come to the shop! We have several floor models you can test.

Viola Rosins

Viola rosin is an essential accessory for all players. Rosin is a block or cake of tree sap you rub on the bow hair required to have it produce sound. The bow will not produce sound when drawn across the strings without rosin. Ideally, players use rosin specifically made for their instrument. Varieties are often differing levels of stickiness, and depend on the player’s tastes.

Viola Mutes

Viola mutes are an affordable, useful accessory for violists of all skill levels. Mutes rest on the bridge to reduce the bridge’s vibration and thus the volume of sound emitted by the instrument. Mutes are commonly used by players in groups or ensembles, as those pieces frequently call for muted playing from time to time. We also have practice mutes, which diminish the sound enough for someone to practice and not disturb those in the next room!

Viola Fine Tuners

Viola fine tuners are a great accessory for any player, but especially for beginners. Fine tuners make tuning your viola much easier. Instead of having to use the pegs at the scroll (which takes a lot of practice!), fine tuners are on the tailpiece. You screw and unscrew the tuner, making smaller, more precise adjustments to the tension of the string. We carry more varieties of fine tuners in our shop than our website. In general, our rental instruments all carry fine tuners. These are available in our shop.

Viola Pickups

Viola pickups are a great accessory for viola players hoping to perform in a professional setting where there is a concern about audibility.

Our chin rests are not listed on our website, but we have many varieties in our shop. To try a chin rest (or several!) in person, please make an appointment! This will ensure the chin rests you would like to try are in the shop and we have space (and staff) to accommodate you. The best method is to call or text us during business hours. (This is also the case if you need to coordinate shipment to try an instrument.) To text, click the small orange speech bubble on the lower right-hand side of our website. To call, our phone number is 1-818-246-0278. You are welcome to email us, but we respond quickest via phone and text.
