About the Maker
Daniel Arlig (1977- ) is a contemporary luthier who was born in Springfield, Missouri and grew up in Minnesota. Originally a viola player, Arlig went on to study double bass performance at the New England Conservatory of Music. Arlig moved back to Minnesota to earn a degree in String Instrument Repair from Minnesota State College. He then returned to Boston study Violin Making and Restoration at the North Bennet Street School under the tuteledge of Kevin Kelly, David Polstein, and Thomas Hummel. Arlig completing the three-year program in only two, graduating in 2002. He then apprenticed under John R. Waddle in St. Paul, Minnesota before opening his own shop. He has been awarded Honorable Mention from the Art of Sound Violin Making Competition, and is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers. Along with his work as a luthier, Arlig continues to perform regularly in the Twin Cities area.
