Why Metzler?

resonant, refined, mature

About the Instrument
This violin has a warm, refined power while simultaneously responsive and nimble. The rich golden-red varnish brings out the fiddleback grain on its two-piece back. Tight flames run along the instrument’s ribs, and the mother-of-pearl floral inlay in the tailpiece is a lovely detail. This violin is in excellent condition.

Interior label reads: “Caesar Maggiali Monetensis / Carrara (Italy) / Fecit Anno 1936”
Length: 137mm
Upper Bouts: 164mm
Middle: 110mm
Lower Bouts: 206mm

About the Maker
Cesare Maggiali (1886-after 1954) was born in Moneta, Tuscany and briefly studied under the master luthier Igino Sderci. Often drawing from Stradivari and Guarneri models for his instruments, Maggiali lived and worked in Fossola, Carrara and later in La Spezia. While considered an amateur violinmaker due to the fact he was employed as a schoolteacher, Maggiali nonetheless crafted remarkable instruments throughout his prolific career (he made 150 violins as well as several violas and cellos). In 1937, Maggiali exhibited his work in Cremona and in 1954 earned a gold medal at the exhibition in Rome.
