About the Instrument
This viola has a clear warmth in its tone. It has a responsive playability, unflagging in its strength of sound. A lustrous amber varnish is applied over a tight flame figure extending from the centerjoint of the two-piece maple back. The ribs and scroll are of a plainer figure. This viola is thoughtfully antiqued and shaded by its maker, and is in excellent condition.

About the Maker
Chunyee Lu (1963- ) is a contemporary luthier based in Chicago. Lu was born in Shanghai and initially trained as violinist, like his father. He came to the United States in 1989 to study at the Chicago School of Violin Making. Upon graduation, Lu was the primary restorator for Kagan & Gaines workshop before becoming the Head of Restoration in William Harrison Lee Company. In 2000, Lu opened his own atelier, Guadagnini Violin Shop, in the Fine Arts Building, which houses three other workshops. Lu attends to the instruments of players throughout the Midwest, as well as many of those of the members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
