About the Instrument:
This cello is well-balanced, with a particularly singing upper register. With easy playability, it also features a full, rich, and lush tone. Would be excellent as a solo instrument. The back is formed from one piece of quarter-cut maple, marked by narrow and irregular flame and a 4-inch knot on the lower treble side. The wood of the ribs and scroll are similar to that of the back, but with more regular flame. The two-piece spruce top has straight and narrow grain in the center, with the grain narrowing at the joint and widened at the flanks. The instrument is covered with a red-brown varnish that has been lightly antiqued by the maker, revealing a pale gold ground beneath. The cello is in new condition.

About the Makers:
David Polstein is a contemporary luthier based in Newton, Massachusetts. After graduating from the violin making program at Boston's North Bennet Street School, Polstein apprenticed under Arthur Toman in Newton, focusing on repair and restoration. In 1995, Polstein opened his own studio in the same town. Almost a decade later, he joined forces with Christopher White in crafting violas and cellos. He has received ten awards from the Violin Society of America Competitions, including two Silver Medals and a Certificate of Merit for violas constructed with White. Polstein is a member of the the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers and has served as the Secretary of its Board of Governors. Is currently an advisor to the violin program at his alma mater, the North Bennet Street School.

Christopher J. White is a contemporary luthier based in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. After studying double bass, White attended the North Bennet Street School in Boston for violin making. After working under Sam Zygmuntowicz and William Monical in their workshops, White opened his own atelier in Boston in 1991. Beginning in 2003, White has collaborated with David Polstein in making violas and cellos. He has received ten awards from the Violin Society of America Competitions, including two Silver Medals and a Certificate of Merit for violas constructed with Polstein. White is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers, and has served on the Board of Governors. For more than fifteen years, White has regularly taught and served as an advisor at his alma mater violin making program.
