About the Instrument
This viola has a beautiful, dependable sound with a bright A string. The instrument delivering an even across all registers, responsive to the player’s hand. A dark caramel varnish is applied across its two-piece relatively plain back with flecks. The ribs, neck, and scroll of of a similar material.

About the Maker
Dorian Barnes (1976- ) is a contemporary luthier based in Houston, Texas. Born in Philadelphia into a musical family, he was the youngest of three children to a concert pianist and violist. His grandfather was a violinist and amateur luthier, his grandmother the first woman member of the Detroit Symphony. Initially trained as a pianist, Barnes also played violin and French horn. At the age of 15, he began apprenticing under Al Stancel at Casa del Sol Violins in Indianapolis, where the teenager focused on bow rehairing and repair. Barnes went on to earn a degree in String Technology and Chemistry at Indiana University’s Jacob's School of Music. Upon graduation in 1994, Barnes began working for Consort International, setting up their Sofia violins, violas, and  cellos while studying under his colleague, the luthier Mark T. Womack. In 2002, Barnes began working at the Lisle Violin Shop in Houston, Texas, where he now serves as the Director of Workshop Operations. Barnes continues his studies under Marilyn Wallin and Raymond Schryer, attends workshops such as at those at Oberlin, and has lead bridge carving demonstrations and sound adjustment seminars for local instructors. In 2006, Barnes was awarded the Certificate of Merit for Tone at the Violin Society of America International Competition.
