About the Instrument
This instrument is built on an original model inspired by the work of the 17th century master luthier Giovanni Paolo Maggini of Brescia, as illustrated in its beautiful double purfling and pronounced f-holes, both typical of Maggini's work. This viola is made of well-aged New England grown wood, with a two-piece back cut on the quarter from maple with a medium tiger figure descending very slightly from the center joint. The ribs and scroll are of maple more highly flamed to that of the back. The table is of two pieces of spruce of very irregular growth. The varnish is of a lovely umber over a golden ground and is shaded and imitated. The fittings are of boxwood.
Interior contains two labels. A facsimile label reads: “Gio:Paolo Maggini in Breſcia.” On the opposite side, the second label reads: "Douglas C. Cox / Brattleboro, Vermont, 2016" and bears the maker's signature along with the demarkation "#932." The interior is also branded and initialed on the inside.
