Why Metzler?

Description:

This 4/4 unlabeled German violin has a warm, complex, bassy sound. It has a narrow neck that makes it very comfortably playable. It was likely made ca. 1920.

The neck of the instrument has been scribed where it meets the scroll, to imitate the appearance of a neck graft. This is a stylistic choice, and not indicative of a real repair.

The back is formed from a single piece of quarter-cut maple, marked by medium-narrow width flame, which slants upward from the treble side. The wood on the ribs and scroll is similar to that of the back. The grain of the two-piece spruce top is straight, with a grain that widens dramatically toward the flanks.

The instrument is covered with a warm orange-brown varnish, with substantial black patina, over a pale brown ground. It is very heavily antiqued and shaded by the maker. It is in excellent condition.
