Why Metzler?

nimble, bold, supple

About the Instrument
This cello is a delight to play, with a gorgeous upper register. It has a sound nimble and bright while also rich and bold sound across registers. The burnt russet varnish is applied over a wheat ground. A curly grain extends outward from the center joint of the cello’s two-piece maple back. The ribs bear a similar figure, with the scroll more highly flamed. The instrument has been thoughtfully antiqued and shaded by the luthier.

Interior label reads: "Jason Starkie / Seattle anno 2025"
Length: 759 mm
Upper Bouts: 342 mm
Middle Bouts: 235 mm
Lower Bouts: 438 mm

About the Maker
Jason Starkie is a contemporary luthier based in Seattle. In 2001, Starkie began apprenticing under Robert Brewer Young at Viseltear & Young Violins. For the next decade, Starkie worked closely with Young, following him to Spain and France, before Starkie returned to the United States to open his own workshop in Seattle, Washington in 2011. In the years since, Starkie has frequently attended the Violin Society of America’s Oberlin Summer Workshop to learn from luthiers such as Joseph Curtin and Samuel Zygmuntowicz, while periodically traveling to London to visit the workshop of Stephan Peter Greiner. Starkie has been awarded the Violin Society of America’s Certificate of Merit for Cello Tone.
