About the Maker
Stephen Lohmann (1951- ) is a contemporary luthier. Born in Denver, Colorado, Lohmann’s family moved to San Francisco when he was a child. In 1977 his friend (and later, mentor) Francis Kuttner, helped him to enroll in the International School for Violinmaking in Cremona, Italy. After three years, he returned to San Francisco and began to work with Frank Passa in his violin shop. In the years that followed, Lohmann worked under Boyd Poulsen in San Mateo, California and Carl Applebaum in Olympia, Washington. In 1992, Lohmann set up his own independent shop to make and repair violins. His instruments are fashioned in the Italian tradition he first learned decades ago, and he has earned multiple honors at Violin Society of America Competitions.
